Generating Biodiversity

A scientific study that got underway in 2002 and today amasses amazing figures, ranks Native's sugarcane farms as highly supportive environments for generating biodiversity.

For 11 years, researchers from Embrapa Satellite Monitoring, the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation, have lead a team of ecologists, biologists, agronomists and other researchers in carrying out an inventory of higher vertebrates existing on these farms, and has attained very significant results.

So far, in more than 2,800 field surveys that have been carried out pursuant to a protocol with environmental variables to describe the local ecological conditions, 340 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians were identified in Native's farms, and during the research, several new species started being sighted, with a significant increase in terms of the population and of the appearance of juveniles, indicating good presence of faunal populations. This is 23 times more biodiversity than that found in conventional surgarcane fields in the same region.

Among the environmental quality indicator species, 49 are listed as endangered. Learn more about the species and the related studies through the options below.
